Summary:

Life is supposed to be perfect after Cheyenne Lane’s Ascension ceremony, but it turns out awakening her vampire half only complicates things more. Burdened with a patronizing family and constant surveillance by the Vampire Council, Cheyenne welcomes a summer vacation to the magical city of New Orleans. But Cheyenne quickly realizes that she can’t escape her problems, no matter where she goes.

After seventeen years of fearing exposing her secret to humans, Cheyenne’s world is rocked when she starts to fall for a witch named Eli. When he shows Cheyenne how complex the world really is, she must accept that everything she thought she knew about being a Deuxsang is a lie.

As if all this isn’t problem enough, Cheyenne finds herself the pawn of a conspiracy hatched by those who should be protecting her. Her whole life Cheyenne is told what to believe and who to trust. Now, she’s forced to choose for herself who and what is right. No matter which choice she makes, it will cost her everything.

Steeped in the mystery, intrigue and rich history of New Orleans and the secretive world of the Deuxsang, teen vampire, Cheyenne, and her forbidden love, Eli, embark on a very different, and vastly more dangerous, journey as the net of betrayal tightens around them. This intense and fresh novel is enchanting, engrossing and impossible to put down right up to the cliffhanger ending. Remember, the end is not the end.

My Review:

I missed reading a book with vampires. I have read so many that I am sometimes scared of starting a new one because I might not be completely satisfied. So I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this blog tour. The idea of half breads becoming more powerful than the vampires, the mix between vampires and witches really made me very enthusiastic.

Still, I would have wanted a lot more from the story. I would have wanted a lot more attention to details, it mostly seems as an introduction to a more complex action which will unfold later in the coming books.

I do not feel very comfortable with the chosen title. The entire action starts with Cheyenne’s Ascension when she was a young girl. Since it was a traumatizing event, she has not managed to get over it. She understood then that she’s not just an ordinary Deuxsang, but somehow nobody cared to enlighten her on what she actually is. Since that moment she has grown up and other changes start to happen. The title underlines an important event in her life, but an old one chronologically speaking.

Regarding the action, on one side I felt like it was rushed, but on the other it lacked details like why she’s not like the others. Like why there are so many lies, what are the interests that other have. I don’t know, too much mystery. The characters are quite alright. We find out a little bit about everybody.  Cheyenne is quite indoctrinated by her family when it comes to history and she always has followed the rules. I did not like her not insisting more on why she had such a violent Ascension. She simply accepted everything. I could go on and on with things that don’t add up when it comes to other characters as well, but I don’t want to turn my review into a negative one.

So without further comments I decided to give it 3.5 stars, mainly because it’s a book with or about vampires and there are some signs of this becoming a great series. I hope next one will be better though.

Jadeite’s Journey
by Lucinda Stein
Genre: YA Scifi
Release date: January 24th 2017
Inkspell Publishing

Summary:

When romance turns deadly…

Jadeite’s perfect world comes crashing down on her. In the futuristic world of United Society, her only problem has been how to act around the cute boy on the air shuttle. But Jadeite’s world changes when she comes across a man who looks alarmingly like her father. Clones were declared illegal years ago. When she sees her father, a robotic engineer, headed to the Dark Edge of United Society, she follows him and uncovers her father’s secret life.

Jadeite shadows her father past the boundary of United Society and into a primitive world of canyons and high deserts. She learns her father is a Ridge Runner passing between the two worlds. Even more alarming, she discovers her younger brother, Malachite, is sick and requires medicine only available from over the Ridge. After her father is arrested, Jadeite takes his place in order to save her brother’s life.

But her world turns even more precarious after she breaks up with her obsessive boyfriend, Mattie. Jadeite soon learns his threats are more than words, and she finds her life is in jeopardy.

My Review:

Lucinda Stain’s book sent me flying in a future beyond my imagination. I was taken aback by the amazing world she has created. Not to mention the plot and characters – which are as well a delight! Once Jadeite finds out that United Society is not exactly what it seems and that the ones she trusted most have a secret agenda – her father or her boyfriend for example – she will have to find a way out, to bring back balance in her life.

What I mostly loved about the story was the impeccable way in which the United Society was imagined by the author. I have read many dystopian novels that imagined a world in our future with people divided by classes, professional achievements or other things like that. But to create a world with no plants, no animals, no paper (!!!) is something different.  Especially since the action is not focused only on mass manipulation, but also on typical teenage issues.

I do believe this book deserves at least 5 stars and it’s a series that I will for sure follow!

My Review:

This is my first review for an audiobook and I am so lucky it is a great start! I loved the story and the narrator!

I am one of (probably) the few people who have not read “The Hunger Games”, nor have I seen the movies. Not because I don’t like the story, but it was so much publicity around it, so many people saying how great the story is, how amazing the main character is that I feel I already know what to expect. So, based on that, I started listening to “Anomalies”, with an open mind, trying not to let my idea of other similar books cloud my judgment.

So all is nice in the world, everything has its place. Everybody knows what will come next, until Keeva discovers she’s an anomaly. She’s now someone whose destiny has been altered, someone who doesn’t fit in anymore. When she realizes she will not be imprinted with her intended partner at Monarch camp, she will be faced with a new future, one she has to decide on.

The authors have created an ideal world, with no diseases, no worries about the next day. Everyone lives in owe of their savior Sobek, who brought peace after a war that nearly caused the extinction of humanity. Society is divided into communities, with specific purposes, being ruled by the Global Governance. An interesting thought. Nowadays people have forgotten to help each other without expecting anything in return.

The main character, Keeva, is part of the Ocean community. She loves the ocean, she loves swimming and can’t wait to be reunited with her intended partner and come together to her beloved community to follow in her father’s footsteps. Still, in all her thoughts, she has never forgotten about her little sister, who was taken away at birth. The words of the strange man that took her have been kept hidden in her soul. Her carefully planned life has been turned upside down when she realizes she’s an anomalie. Though something strange is happening to the ones that do get imprinted.

A person who plans her whole life has to learn to live in the moment. She will have to overcome her fear of the unknown, to follow her instincts.

The action is told mostly from her perspective, but there are also some small passages where we are presented with Calex’s point of view. He is Sobek‘s son and the future ruler of Earth. I appreciated this insight, as it brought a clear understanding of how the Global Governance works and all the plans they have for humanity. Calex also has to face a new life, but as opposed to Keeva, he knows exactly what he has to do, though he’s not entirely sure on how to achieve it.

What I also liked about these two characters was that they never meet in this first book. Calex sees her for just some seconds and there is no super attraction. He sees her as interesting due to her strange red hair but nothing else. And here is the point where all my ideas regarding how this book will end are turned to dust.  So for me the action was not that predictable. Sure, there were hints on what to expect, but only on some small level.

As for the reader, Lucinda Clare does a great job! Taking into account I am not a native English user, I had no trouble understanding the words. I only noticed that for one character she used a certain accent, but later on it disappeared (Anelia). No other complains from my side.

So, to close this long review, a total of (wait for it, wait for it) 5 stars go to this amazing collaboration between Sadie turner and Colette Freedman. I loved the story and the main character was great as well. The quality of the audiobook was great as well so I hope you read it or listen to it and come back with an opinion J

Summary from Goodreads:

Straight-laced, veterinary surgeon, Summer Wynters is ready to break the rules. And who better to break them with than the most irreverent of all men, mega rock star Malcolm Angel? With one last summer free from work obligations, Summer moves to New York City, and at the coaxing of her friend, pretends to be a model so she can spend one wild night with Malcolm.

My Review:

Summer of Irreverence is a very sweet read. I loved every page and I loved the characters and their story.  It’s the kind of book that offers distraction and a good time J

Summer is looking for some time for herself before starting her career, before acting like a responsible person.  She did not have in mind any romantic implication on the long term when meeting Malcolm Angel – a rock star with a bad reputation. As any love story, he has a secret of his own. Can a relationship that started based on a lie overcome the differences between the two? Can Malcolm fully trust Summer? Or is she able to understand his past?  You’ll see…

I can say overall that the story was quite ok, maybe a little rushed when Malcolm’s issues were set on the table and probably the characters could have been a little more defined. Other than that, I can’t find anything that I did not like. It’s good we have both sides of the story, even if Malcolm’s thought are not as predominant as summer’s. This goes well with his character and his mysterious angle.

So enjoy the book, it’s quite a nice way to spend some free time. Hope you like it and come back and share your experience !

About the Book

Portrait of a man with naked torso and tattooes. Dark and deep shadows.Title: Make It Rain

Author: Sasha Marshall

Genre: Rock Star Romance

Kip

When you rip the Guitar Goddess’s world apart, and your own, how in the f@*k are you supposed to find redemption? She’s my world, and I’ve shattered her. What began as an absence for us to both heal, ends in the dissolution of our relationship, and my breaking heart. I committed the most unforgivable transgression, but maybe not everything is as it seems.

One more tragedy, one more f@*king tragedy may be the only way back into her heart. I have one more chance to explain what really happened, and hope she believes me. I’ll embrace this time to show her I’m still the man she fell in love with, and to win her back, but how in the hell am I supposed to do that when she’s holding me at arm’s length?

Our pain, all of our pain, began with Caleb’s death. Maybe I’m still paying the price for him leaving her, because for a short time, I left her too. All I can do is pray to him and whatever is out there, that we’ll be brought back together. I can only hope that she’ll sleep beside me once again, smile for only me, and love me the way she used to. I can only long for her to make me whole again, and stop this ache in my chest.

Henley

He was the only one who had never betrayed me, until he did. He never lied to me, until he did. He was always by my side, until he wasn’t. The one person who has always been my constant, best friend, and then lover left me. They all leave me, though. They all lie to me. They all betray me at some point. Then, he showed up with his gorgeous green eyes, tattoos, and undercut, and I have a hard time staying away, but I also can’t seem to look him in the eye anymore. I can’t give him anymore of my heart, because that precious little organ barely survived him the first time.

Maybe we should’ve never crossed the line from friends to lovers. If we hadn’t, I’d still have him by my side. I we’d never danced the way we did, he’d still be my best friend. I don’t know how he’s supposed to fit into my life anymore. He’s always made my life brighter, happier, and carefree. How do you learn to live without that? I thought I knew everything about him, but now I question everything.

This is the fifth installment of the Guitar Face Series. The series must be read in order.
