Her fingers, now numb from the poison, fumbled and the key slipped from her grasp. Desperately she felt around with her toe, trying to grip the key and bring it back to her lock. A Fine Line
Genre: Romance, Erotica, BDSM
Publisher: Totally Bound
Publication Date: November 22, 2016
No one would understand that my submission empowered me, that I felt stronger kneeling at Gabriel’s feet than I ever had standing at Paul’s side.
Faye Austin seems to have it all–a fulfilling career, a successful husband, a beautiful home. But appearances can be deceptive and sometimes Faye can’t help thinking she’s living the wrong life. A lifetime of being compared to her beautiful younger sister, Ginny, has left her feeling second best, and a chance discovery while looking at her husband’s laptop has led her to realize that her marriage is not all it seems.
Then she meets the handsome Gabriel Scott, a man who likes to play sexual games of power and control, and suddenly everything makes sense. Gabriel’s natural dominance is so compelling that Faye feels her own submissiveness awakening in response, a reaction that both horrifies and excites her. She works with victims of domestic abuse and is adamant that no man will ever tell her what to do. But there’s something about Gabriel that draws her in and gives her a glimpse of who she really wants to be.
Can Gabriel give her what she needs? Or will Ginny get there first?

My Review

“A Fine Line” has something that has captured my attention from the blurb: seeing a woman that works with victims of domestic abuse enter a sub-dom relationship. Understanding all these aspects from her eyes is very refreshing and brings an interesting angle to the story.

Faye has had the illusion of a perfect life, with perfect job and perfect marriage, even if she may not have the best relationship with her sister. When secrets about her and Faye’s husband come to life, she realizes thing are not at all what they seam and that something is lacking. Meeting Gabriel has given her the chance to find this missing feeling: the feeling of safety. With all his… out of the ordinary methods, he gives her courage and makes her trust him with her all. And in my opinion, that’s the most important and interesting fact when it comes to our new couple.

Gabriel’s attempt at a married woman does not make him the most serious guy, but it does portray him as an opportunist. He sees a chance at a frail woman and he takes it. However, his intention is to bring out the shine in her, build back her confidence and show her how special and beautiful she really is.

The reason for my decreasing one star is because I would have wanted a resolution between Faye and her husband earlier in the book. While I understand that the idea is to rebuild her personality, I felt like this side was not solved in proper time. The ending brings a good solution to the problems and I am quite ok with how things turned out.

All in all, I liked it a lot and I liked the perspective of the book. The author did a wonderful job with our main characters and with illustrating Faye’s struggles and as well show the intensity of her relationship with Gabriel. 4 out of 5 stars and my congratulations 🙂

Book review: When a Duke Pursues a Lady

An innocent woman.
A loyal agent to the Crown.
A path of deception that tests the bonds of love.
WHEN A DUKE PURSUES A LADY
Tabetha Waite
When a Duke Pursues a Lady
Series: Ways of Love Book 3
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Etopia Press
Publication Date: January 10, 2018
After three years trapped in an abusive and loveless marriage, Lyra Coventry has been arrested for the murder of her husband, the Earl of Weston. Although she’s innocent of the crime, she has no one to turn to for help, until Alister Ayles, the Duke of Albright, comes forward to offer his aid. The handsome duke takes her into his custody, saving her from a jail cell. But Lyra doesn’t suspect Alister’s ulterior motive—to prove her guilty of treason—as she slowly loses her heart to a man who is far more than he seems…
Alister Ayles leads a secret life. To the ton, he is a dullard, the subject of ridicule. But as a highly respected agent for the Crown, he’s discovered a higher purpose by protecting his country. Now he’s faced with his toughest investigation to date, uncovering a plot against the Crown…and discovering whether or not Lyra, the woman he let slip through his fingers years ago, is a traitor. Nothing is as it seems, and as the plot unravels, the dangers to them increase. He struggles to keep his feelings for her contained, but when it comes down to a test of loyalty, will he stand strong, or fall prey to his desires?

My Review

“When a Duke Pursues a Lady” is a story full of twists and complications. The direction always changes (intentionally) and the reader is taken from following one path to the next. The action is simple, yet complex at the same time, so feeling bored and tired while reading is out of the question.

Lyra is a victim of 19th century perception of women. She has had to submit to a husband she never had feelings for, a horrible person whose death cannot cause anything else but relief. However, when accused of murder, she begins fighting for her innocence, all the while discovering the many layers her husband had. Alister’s conflictive feelings for his only love begin tormenting him as soon as he is charged with the task of finding out her involvement with an organization planning to overthrow the current leaders. Question is: will they be able to stick to their mission or will their feelings shift their objectives?

Now, I was mentioning the many layers of this book in the beginning of this review. We have treason inside a treason plan. We have characters that are not what they seem and what’s more, we have a murder that may not have happened as everybody tries to imply. I was reading until the end to find out who the killer was and my suspicions shifted many times throughout the book.

As much as I liked it, I decided to decrease one star from my rating because I would have liked more emphasis on Lyra’s development. She has had a very unhappy marriage that has left scares on her heart. I would have wanted to see more of how this has affected her.

All in all, I had a great experience reading  Tabetha Waite’s book. Her writing is beautiful and her story is very complex. If you are a fan of Historical Romance, this book is definitely for you. The mystery aspect is well integrated in the plot and this gives an additional plus. Happy reading !

About Tabetha Waite

Tabetha Waite

Tabetha grew up in a small town in Missouri with big dreams of being a published author after her fourth grade teacher said she liked reading her stories. She began her journey by putting pen to paper writing anything from fantasy to mystery. It wasn’t until she started high school that her grandmother introduced her to the classic, Gothic novels. As her love of romance grew to encompass Harlequins, it wasn’t until she read “Midnight Bride” by Kathleen Drymon did she develop a fascination for historical England. After discovering the allure of Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, she was hooked!
It wasn’t until 30 years and 63 rejections later that her debut novel, “Why the Earl is After the Girl,” the first book in her Ways of Love series was picked up for publication in July 2016 to critical acclaim, winning the 2017 Best Indie Book Award in Romance and Second Place in the Feathered Quill Book Award in Romance for 2018. It was initially released as an ebook and later in paperback in February of 2017. Her second book, “Where the Viscount Met His Match,” released on ebook in June 2017 and in paperback in April of 2018. Her third novel, “When a Duke Pursues a Lady,” released on ebook in January 2018.
When she’s not writing, Tabetha is reading as true bookworms do, checking out any flea market, antique mall, or doll show she comes across, and working as a lunch attendant at the local community college. She is a certified PAN member of the RWA and is a proud supporter of Passionflix.

My Review

If I were to choose a story that marked my love for reading or if I were to mention the title of the story from which I took my first lesson that would be “Beauty and the Beast”. So how can I not like “Don’t Look at Me”? Yes, I had very high expectations and yes, I wanted to experience that lesson in the most beautiful way possible, adapted to our modern times. And I had my expectations met.

The blurb describes perfectly the condition each character is in when they meet. They don’t expect too much from people. They don’t expect to be understood, but they both recognize a scarred soul. What I mostly liked about this book is how the author presented their problems. If Quest has army scars, that marked his soul, that made him angry, Haven has her scares out in the open.  So now the question is: what’s worse: having visible or hidden marks? J. P. Grider does not say that one character is in a worse state than the other, or at least I do not perceive this book like that. They meet, they are scared and don’t trust each other, but soon discover the beauty in one another.

The amount of emotion, the feelings are so well captured. I was right there feeling angry and lost and happy and beautiful with our main characters. The author has an excellent way with words and I am so happy to have been introduced to her work! The action is not boring at all, even if the story is more focused on the characters.

So I do advise you to read it and I hope you’ll like it as much as I did. All my 5 stars and my appreciation for a great story go to “Don’s Look at Me” by J. P. Grider.

Managing Blake Teaser

Excerpt

Wolf whistles and cat calls filled the room. Caris began to laugh and lost herself in the moment. She d never crashed any party, let alone a bachelor party. She scanned the pub to make sure
there weren t any strippers hiding among the packed room of the best-looking group of men she d ever seen in person. But it was the man standing in the entryway who captured her immediate attention.
The manager of the Outlaws, Blake Anderson, was looking her up and down. His ocean-blue gaze captured hers. He d caught her looking, which she didn t have a problem with. Any woman she knew whoenjoyed a finely sculpted man would have done the same thing. She appreciated his wide shoulders and long legs encased in jeans that fit him in all the right places. His dark hair brushed the collar of his white button-down shirt. His sleeves were rolled up, exposing his sun-kissed skin and muscled forearms.
She was a sucker for a man with well-defined shoulders and arms. And a muscled back. But she had no way of knowing ifhis back matched his front; she could only guess and dream. Because the dream she had of him the last time she saw him came rushing back and warmed her cheeks. They may have never spoken more than polite hellos, but that didn t meanshe hadn t thought about him a time or two. Well, maybe more than that, but it was a fantasy she d never thought would happen. She never thought their paths would cross again. Tonight, it had. He was looking at her similar to how he did in her dreams.
But she didn t appreciate the knowinggrin on his face. She gave herself a shake and broke eye contact. She was not here to hook up. Not with Blake or anyone else Lara had plans to put in her path. She had enough drama going on in her life, thank you very much. She just wanted to have another drink and have a good time with her friends. And maybe window shop the group of well put together baseball players who dominated the room.
Maverick and Kelsey had ended their epic kiss, and she was helping him remove the cornucopia of bras he d acquired. She found Noel at a table sipping a drink while Lara and Luke seemed to be in deep discussion. Their wedding was next month, but at the moment neither one wasputting off the vibes Kelsey and Mav were transmitting. Caris walked over to thetable and sat down.
So, what s everyone drinking?   
Noel waved her off and mouthed, not good . Caris looked back at the arguing couple and cringed. Dammit. She hated seeing people she cared about argue. It brought back too many memories of her own parents and the constant turmoil they seemed to thrive on.
A glass of wine appeared in front of her on the table. It was attached to the arm she had just been ogling moments ago. Without asking, Blake pulled out a chair, sat and ignored her.

Excerpt

Two days after Rebecca Mast’s return to her childhood home in Lost Creek, she walked down the lane of the family farmtoward her future. Her black widow’s dress contrasted starkly with the pale greens and bright yellows of a sunny spring day in the Pennsylvania countryside. Her son, six-year-old Elijah, trudged next to her, holding tight to her hand rather than skipping and hopping ahead down the lane like one of his cousins would.
It was early yet, she assured herself. Surely soon he’d forget the darkness of the past few years and be like any other Amish child his age. That was the heartfelt prayer of her heart for her son. As for her well, the return to normal would take longer, if it ever happened.
But at least she was home, with her family around her, and today she would take the first step toward a new life forher son and herself. That alone was something to make her heart thankful.
The frame two-story house came into
view ahead of them, standing at the point where the farm lane met the country road. When her mammi had written that old Mr. Evans had gone to live with his daughter and put the house up for sale, she’d known exactly what she wanted to do with the money she’d receive for selling the farm she and James had owned in Ohio.
The down payment James’s brother Johnhad given her had been enough to cover the cost of the house. John’s continuing monthly payments would pay to remodel the old place into a secure, peaceful homefor her and Elijah, and the quilt shop she’d have in the downstairs rooms would support them. That was the extent of her dreams for the future, and it was enough.
Daniel Mast stood waiting by the backporch, leaning against one of the posts as if he could wait there all day for her, if need be. As they came closer, her stomach tightened as she searched the tall, broad figure for a glimpse of the neighbor boy who’d been her childhood playmate. She didn’t find him, nor did she see the gangly teenager who’d told her all about his crushes on the girls in their rumspringa group.
Daniel had grown into a strong, sturdy-looking man. It was her own uncertainty that made her long to find something in him that was familiar. The rich, glossy brown of his hair was a bitdarker now, and the fact that he didn’t have the traditional Amish beard allowedher to see his stubborn jaw.
He’d always had that stubbornness. His golden brown eyes had a glint of kindness that she felt sure reflected his kind heart, and his lips curled in a familiar grin. Her tension evaporated, and she smiled.

My Review

What is not to love about this book? A romance as strong as time, good characters and good plot. Oh, and the Irish aspect of it all offers a delight to the reader. So yes, I liked it.

I always like good romance books. I always love when authors bring that something to the story that keeps me reading and reading. This is what happened to me with “Daughter of the King”, because I read it in one day. I was so captivated by the traditions, the bride and groom and the intrigue that I kept pushing for the end.

Brighit of Clan Cruadhlaoch has been promised as bride to Darragh of Clan MacNaughton, with the intention to unite the two clans. But the little Brighit would not be commanded as a child and will definitely not submit to anybody as a young woman. Darragh has got himself a feisty one, I tell ya! The night before her wedding, she gets into trouble and thus, her marriage starts off with a lie that would follow and torment her for the weeks to come.

The main characters are well developed. They both have a kind heart; even if Brighit’s rebellious personality causes trouble or Darragh’s legacy as a future leader of his clan imposes a strong personality. Still, out of the two, he has the most difficult task to win her trust. He proves his nobility and treats her with the respect she deserves as his wife. I loved him so so much! Brighit’s secret is what keeps her away from her husband and her fear of the repercussions her acts may bring upon her family. But they are both such a lovely couple.

The author has delighted us with a glimpse of Irish culture and as well dialect. Even if at the beginning it was a little hard to follow the particularities, I quickly became accustomed and even liked it. I would have liked to see more in regards to the traditions of those times however.

To summarize, this is a quick and lovely romance book, with a dose of Irish. Even if this is not the first book in the series, it can be easily read as a strand alone. I am a fan of Ashley York’s work now and I cannot wait to read more of the series. 5 stars and  Happy Reading J
